Top lawmaker calls for greater environmental awareness

 XIAMEN, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, has issued a call for more efforts to create greater awareness¹ among the public on thriftiness² and environmental protection.

Wu, chairman of the Standing³ Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the call in an inscription⁴ he wrote for a workshop to mark the 20th anniversary of an environment-related media program launched by the NPC's Environmental Protection and Resources Conservation Committee, in collaboration⁵ with major media organizations in the country.

The workshop also received a letter of congratulation from Chen Zhili, a vice⁶ chairperson of the NPC Standing Committee. Chen praised the program for its contribution to enhancing the country's environmental protection and expressed hope it will make greater contribution to building a beautiful China.

The program, launched in 1993, has inspired a large number of Chinese journalists to participate in its activities with major aims to expose illegal activities that caused environmental pollution.
