       SANTIAGO, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of Latin American countries on Monday congratulated Michelle Bachelet on being elected president of Chile.

  Bachelet of the center-left New Majority coalition1 won the presidential runoff on Sunday with 62 percent of the votes and will take office on March 11, 2014.She served as Chile's first female president from 2006 to 2010.
  Argentine President Cristina Fernandez greeted the Chilean president-elect by telephone.
  "There was a very cordial phone call between Bachelet and our president, who was the first head of state to call her," Gines Gonzalez Garcia, Argentina's ambassador in Santiago, said on Twitter.
  Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff also congratulated Bachelet via Twitter, saying she is "a friend and partner of Brazil" and "I am certain that my government and Michelle Bachelet's will deepen the relations between our countries even more."
  "Brazil and Chile have a lot to cooperate on and build together," said the Brazilian president, calling for more integration2 among South American countries in general.
  President of the Dominican Republic Danilo Medina expressed the hope that Bachelet's "administration will contribute to strengthening democracy, unification and the continued progress" of Chile.
  "Congratulations to our dear Michelle Bachelet, to Chile and to the entire Great Homeland (of Latin America). Michelle is a source of pride and an example for all of us," Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said on Twitter.
  "I celebrate the victory of Michelle Bachelet because she is a woman who has always accompanied the struggles of the Chilean people," Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes said.
  In a statement, Haitian President Michel Martelly renewed his nation's pledge to strengthen ties with Chile and to "spur cooperation between the two countries for the benefit of both nations."
  "In the name of the government and the people of Haiti, I express my best wishes to my Chilean counterpart for once again becoming president of her country," said Martelly.
  "I congratulate Michelle Bachelet for her victory in the presidential elections of our sister country Chile," Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Twitter.
  "Chile is a strategic partner of Mexico in Latin America and the Caribbean, and we are also member countries of the Pacific Alliance," the Mexican president said.
  Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega sent a letter to Bachelet to congratulate on her victory, saying the historic and cultural ties between Nicaragua and Chile would certainly be deepened.
  Peruvian President Ollanta Humala sent a letter to Bachelet, expressing his wish for the two countries to "work together on the relationship of mutual3 respect, friendship, integration and cooperation."
  Humala said both countries share "an outlook of the future and a renovated4 confidence that allow us to meet the high and noble expectations of both Peruvians and Chileans."
  Uruguayan President Jose Mujica offered Bachelet his support in meeting the "great and difficult challenges" that may lie ahead.
  In a statement released Monday, Mujica congratulated Chile on its "exemplary" elections, saying they indicated the country "will be able to make progress in deepening its democracy and building an always fair and united country."
  Bachelet's victory guarantees the continuity of "developing economic, social and political justice for our peoples" in Latin America, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said in a statement, confirming his assistance to Bachelet's swearing-in ceremony in March.
  Meanwhile, the governments of Colombia and Costa Rica also congratulated Bachelet via their respective foreign ministries5.
