Exercise 1-6: Pitch and Meaning Change                                           CD 1 Track 13 

Practice saying the four sentences  after me. Pay close attention to  the changes in pitch that you must make to convey¹ the different meanings intended. The words to be stressed are indicated in bold² face.  

1.   It sounds like rain . 

2.   It sounds  like rain.  

3.   He  likes  rain, but he hates snow.  

4.   It can't rain on my parade! He  can't do it.  (See also Ex. 1-43 for negatives .) 

1 convey   

vt.传送；运送，输送；传达，表达，传播

参考例句：

• Don't forget to convey my regards when you see him.你去见着他，别忘了给我捎个好儿。
• My letter will convey some idea of my mode of life.我的信将使你了解到一些我的生活方式。

2 bold   

adj.果敢的，冒险的，无畏的；冒失的，鲁莽的

参考例句：

• Her words were so bold that people caught their breath.她的话太大胆了，使人们都倒抽了一口气。
• The room was decorated in bold colours.房间的色调布置得鲜明醒目。
