 Pentagon says Chinese defense¹ chief's visit to help sustain positive momentum² in U.S.-China military ties 

The Pentagon says the visit to the United States by Chinese Minister of National Defense Chang Wanquan will help sustain the "positive momentum" that has been achieved in the U.S.-China military-to-military ties.

A Pentagon spokesman says Chang Wanquan is expected to hold talks with his U.S. counterpart Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon on Monday, when the two "will have an opportunity to discuss a variety of issues," including the U.S.-China relationship and the military-to-military relationship.

The spokesman noted³ that Chang Wanquan's visit illustrates⁴ and will help sustain the positive momentum that has been achieved in the U.S.-China military-to-military relationship over the past 18 months. 

He says the visit "sustains the regular set of interactions between the two leaders that reflects the positive nature of the U.S.-China military-to-military relationship,"

 

Egypt PM says no reconciliation⁵ with "those involved in bloodshed"

Egyptian interim⁶ Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi has vowed⁷ no reconciliation with "those whose hands have been tarnished⁸ by blood," in reference to the Muslim Brotherhood⁹ whose members have clashed with police in protest of a dispersal operation against their sit-in camps. 

Beblawi told reporters there was no chance of reconciliation with those "who violated the law." 

On Saturday, Bebalwi officially proposed dissolution of the Brotherhood.

At least 173 people were killed and more than 1,300 others injured in overnight clashes across Egypt between supporters of deposed¹⁰ President Mohamed Morsi, who emerged from the Brotherhood, and security forces.

The Egyptian government and the state TV have recently been referring to the Brotherhood and its affiliates¹¹ as "terrorists."

 

Philippine gov't vows¹² to probe into ship collision as death toll¹³ rises to 31

The Philippine government has assured that thorough investigation¹⁴ into the two ships collision off central province of Cebu would immediately start to determine who is at fault. 

The death toll has risen to 31 while 172 have remained missing from the ill-fated passenger ship, which collided with a cargo¹⁵ ship Friday night near Talisay in Cebu province. About 629 people have been rescued. 

A Presidential Spokeswoman says the priority at the moment is the search and rescue operations (SARS) for the missing passengers, and the government is ready to extend assistance to the victims.

 

Forces sent for flood relief in NE China 

More than 5,000 officers, soldiers and reservists from the Shenyang Military Area Command (MAC) have been dispatched to northeast China for flood relief.

They have rescued and relocate more than 6,000 people, reinforced dikes and stopped leakages¹⁶, according to a spokesman with the Military Area Command operational department . Shenyang Military Area Command has also sent vehicles and boats to flood-stricken areas. 

Northeast China has been hit by the worst flooding in decades this summer.

By Saturday, the death toll of floods in the provinces of Jilin, Heilongjiang and Liaoning had reached 25.

 

10 dead in S China downpour 

Six people are confirmed dead and three others missing in south China's Guangdong Province due to the geological disasters triggered by southwest monsoon¹⁷.

Earlier this week, four people were killed and four others went missing in the province due to downpours and floods triggered by Typhoon Utor. 

More than one million people from 262 villages and towns were affected¹⁸ by heavy rainfalls triggered by the monsoon. More than 109 thousand people were relocated. 

Downpours have disrupted transportation, leaving more than 3,000 residents trapped in Zijin County, according to the local government. 

Rescue work is underway.

Torrential rain is expected to continue in Guangdong on Sunday.

 

3.17 mln lack drinking water in SW China 

Lingering drought in southwest China's Guizhou Province has been partly relieved by rainfall in most part of the province in the past two days, but still left more than three million people short of drinking water.

More than 17 million people in over 1,300 towns have been affected by the drought since July, with more than 3 million lacking drinking water, according to the provincial¹⁹ flood control and drought relief headquarters. 

The provincial civil affairs department has allocated²⁰ more than 98 million yuan for drought relief efforts.

 

China expects nationwide broadband by 2020 

China says it will strive to complete broadband coverage²¹ of both urban and rural areas by 2020.

The State Council elevated national broadband development as as a national strategy and announced a implementation²² timetable for its development over the coming eight years. 

The strategy aims to achieve WiFi coverage in key public urban areas by 2013 and fixed²³ broadband coverage for half of Chinese households by 2015.
