The Eurozone has emerged from recession after the deepest downturn since the Second World War. Sixteen European Union countries use the Euro currency. Output for those countries grew by 0.4% in the third quarter of this year. That news gave market sentiment a bit of a boost overnight. London’s FTSE closed up more than a third of a percent with the DAX making similar gains. Stocks in the US rose on Friday, setting up a second week of straight gains. Upbeat retail² news reinforced hopes for strong sales in a holiday period. Local markets dropped on Friday, way down by weaker resort stocks. And briefly³ to the currency markets early on Saturday, the Australian dollar was inching up against the greenback.

And British Airways⁴ has moved to hold its ranking as a giant in the skies with a proposal to merge¹ with Spanish carrier, Iberia. BA says it will give the airline access to South American routes. The tie-up is being seen as a move to avoid being sidelined by rivals, Air France and Lufthansa. The BA chief executive has admitted there would be more job cuts as a result of the proposed marriage.
