The Rudd Government's emissions¹ trading scheme is before Cabinet. It's due to sign off on the deal this morning before going to the shadow ministry². It's also expected to approve the plan, but 17 senators say they won't vote for it.

"Carbon is not a pollutant³." They'll try to use the meeting to delay a vote in the Senate until after the Copenhagen climate talks.

South Australian Premier⁴ Mike Rann says he will sue Channel 7 and New Idea over their reports he had an affair with a married parliamentary waitress. In a paid interview, Michelle Chantelois claimed she had sex with the Premier in Parliament and at a nearby golf course. Mr. Rann has emphatically denied the allegations and with the state election in March looming⁵ says his job won't be affected⁶.

In the Philippines, soldiers have discovered the bodies of 36 people kidnapped yesterday in what seem to be politically motivated murders ahead of elections next year.

And in Afghanistan, two cabinet ministers are among 15 officials being investigated for alleged⁷ corruption⁸. Afghanistan has asked Interpol for help in arresting some of the former ministers who've left the country.
