World leaders have agreed to secure all vulnerable nuclear materials around the globe within four years in a bid to thwart¹ any terrorists. Delegates from 47 nations meeting at the nuclear security summit in Washington, say they’ll share information and skills in forensics and law enforcement to stop illicit² nuclear trafficking. On the sidelines of the summit, the US and Russia have agreed to a deal to eliminate excess weapons-grade plutonium from their defense³ programs.

 

Environment inspectors⁴ are heading to an island of central Queensland where oil has washed ashore⁵. Authorities suspect the oil is from the Chinese coal carrier, the Shen Neng 1 which ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef on Easter Saturday.

 

Also in the news, immigration officials on Christmas Island are getting ready for the arrival of another 100 asylum⁶ seekers. The island's detention⁷ facilities are already stretched beyond capacity. And the island’s also been inundated⁸ with the flood of extra immigration and police officers.

 

Long queues have formed at Poland's presidential palace, where people are paying their respects to the late President and First Lady who died in a plane crash last weekend.
