The phone hacking¹ scandal engulfing² the UK media has attracted another high-profile name. Heather Mills, the ex-wife of Beatle Paul McCartney, says a senior journalist from the Mirror admitted to hacking into her phone and listening to her voicemail in 2001. She told a British news programme that a journalist from the paper rang her and quoted parts of a voicemail left by her then boyfriend Sir Paul McCartney. The Mirror Group rejects the accusation³ and says its staff work within the law.

US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey is set to receive a special Oscar recognising her tireless humanitarian⁴ work. The 57-year-old personality, who retired⁵ from her globally screened TV show this year, will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at a dinner in November. Previous recipients⁶ have included Bob Hope, Gregory Peck and Elizabeth Taylor. The Academy described Winfrey as one of the most influential⁷ figures in entertainment and philanthropy.

And staff at gaming giant Nintendo have gone to drastic measures to prevent "game over". Company executives have slashed⁸ their own salaries as well as the price of the Nintendo 3DS console after the company posted its first-ever operating loss. The poor result has been blamed on mediocre⁹ game titles and unexciting technology.
