 Syrian activists¹ are accusing the government of yet another massacre². They say more than 200 bodies have been found in a town near the capital Damascus. Activists say they've been executed. Syrian state TV is reporting the town has been cleansed³ of terrorists. 

 

 

 

A leading indigenous⁴ academic is calling for an end to race-based welfare. Professor Marcia Langton says welfare should be based solely⁵ on economic need. She's told us at News Breakfast that current  policies are leading to a sense of entitlement among some indigenous people.

 

 

 

Queensland's Premier⁶ Campbell Newman's popularity has plunged⁷. A new Galaxy⁸ Poll in Brisbane's Courier Mail newspaper today has found almost 50% of voters are unhappy with the way he's doing his job. But there's better news for Federal Labor⁹. Its support has increased by 2% in the latest Nielsen Poll.

 

 

 

A group of asylum¹⁰ seekers on Christmas Island is continuing a hunger strike this morning. At least 100 asylum seekers are skipping meals or refusing to eat altogether. They've been told they could be sent to either Nauru or Manus Island.

 

 

 

And a car has crashed just minutes after police pursuit was called off in Sydney's south. Police say officers were conducting speed checks at Sans Souci around mid-night when a speeding car failed to stop. Police chased the car, but they called off the pursuit when the driver allegedly reached dangerous speeds. The man's car hit a power pole and rolled onto its roof. He's been taken to hospital.
