 Opposition Frontbencher Malcolm Turnbull has cast doubt on the coalition¹’s key policy of stopping asylum² seeker boats coming to Australia. Mr. Turnbull says it may be unsafe to send asylum seeker boats back to Indonesia without that country’s cooperation. The Coalition has promised to send boats back if it is safe to do so, but so far, Indonesia has refused to back the plan. 

 

Julia Gillard is digging her hears-in amid growing speculation³ about leadership change. The Prime Minister will visit a Brisbane school this morning, selling her education reforms. There’s mountain pressure on one of her main backers Bill Shorten to urge her to quit the leadership. Fellow supporter Craig Emerson denies there’s a new push to reinstall Kevin Rudd.

 

Wikileaks founder⁴ Julian Assange has reviewed he’s had direct/ indirect dealings to former CIA employee Edward Snowden. Snowden fled to Hongkong after disclosing US spy agencies with secret monitoring millions of home calls and Internet data.

 

Prince Edward has visited his father in hospital. Prince Phillip is spending his 92nd birthday recovering from abdominal⁵ surgery. Edward told waiting reporters his father was very well. Prince Philip’s birthday has been marched by traditional gun salutes⁶ at the Tower of London and Hyde Park.

 

Nelson Mandela remains⁷ in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Officials have confirmed the former South African President is in an intensive care. He’s been visited by his ex-wife Winnie. Mr. Mandela is being treated for a recurring⁸ lung infection.
