 Todd: What do you think about the zoo?

 

Dianna: I like to go to the zoo. I like to give all the animals names, like "Bert the Giraffe", but I wish the animals didn't have to be in the zoo, but I think it is good when zoos save¹ animals, and help to make their populations³ grow.

 

Todd: Yeah, they can do some good things, definitely⁵. Ah⁴, what is your favorite⁶ animal?

 

Dianna: My favorite animal, ooh, let me think. I love cats, just as⁷ a pet but, besides⁸ I'd pick⁹ the coolest animal, I think I would¹⁰ pick probably¹¹ a monkey.

 

Todd: A monkey!

 

Dianna: Yeah.

 

Todd: Yeah, there's a lot of monkeys in Japan. Have you ever¹² seen¹³ a monkey in the wild¹⁴?

 

Dianna: No, but my brother is a wild monkey.

 

Todd: Oh, he's going¹⁵ to have to listen to this now.

Zoos save animals.

 

To 'save' an animal is to protect¹⁷ it from danger¹⁸ or death¹⁹.  The example says that zoos keep the animals safe from death.  Notice the following²⁰:

We need to save more water.

population²

 

Zoos help to make animal populations grow.

 

The animal 'population' is the number of animals there are.  We can also use this to talk about the number of humans²³ there are in a city or town.  Notice the following:

 

What is the population of your city?

The population is increasing²⁴ every year.

definitely

 

Zoos can do some good things, definitely.

 

'Definitely' is similar²⁵ to certainly²⁶ or for sure.  We use this for something that is a fact²⁷.  Notice the following:

 

He will definitely come to the party.

We can definitely take care²⁸ of your daughter on Friday night.

pet

 

I love cats, just as a pet.

 

A 'pet' is an animal that lives in your house with you.  You care for it and give it food and love.  Notice the following:

 

He keeps a snake as a pet.

Have you ever seen a monkey in the wild?

 

If an animal is 'in the wild' it is in its natural²⁹ habitat³⁰ or home, not in a cage³¹ at the zoo.  Notice the following:

 

Didn't you see a shark in the wild last year?

At the end of our hike³² we saw³³ a bear in the wild.
