 "I have to admit¹" is an expression² that we use when you're going to say something that maybe you don't want to say — you don't want to tell the truth. “I have to admit”是当你要说你可能不想说的事情——你不想说实话的时候会用到的一种表达。

In fact, there's also an expression, "to tell the truth." 事实上，还有一个“to tell the truth”的表达。

So, I have to admit means³ I have to say — to tell the truth. 因此，“I have to admit”是“我必须承认——说实话”的意思。

"By this time," meaning by 10:30 — "by this time, I'm beat." “到了这时，”也就是晚上10:30——“到了这时，我疲惫不堪了。”

To be beat, "beat," means to be very tired. “To be beat”是“非常累”的意思。

Someone says, "Oh, I'm beat," they've been working all day or they've, like me, been watching television all day, and now I'm beat — I'm tired. 有人会说，“哦，我累坏了，”他们整天都在工作或者他们像我一样，看了一天的电视，所以现在我疲惫不堪了——我累坏了。

Of course, I don't watch television all day, just part of the day! 当然，我不会整天都看电视的，只是一天的部分时间而已啦！

Well, my wife is also beat. 嗯，我妻子也疲惫不堪了。

In the story I say, "I'm beat, and so is my wife," meaning my wife is also very tired. 故事中我说，“I'm beat, and so is my wife，”意思是“我妻子也累坏了”。

"She cleans up when I've finished up." “当我洗完之后她开始洗漱。”

Once again, you see those two word verbs⁴. 又见到了这些两个字的动词。

To clean up is, in this case, to clean your face, to brush your teeth; to get yourself clean is to clean up. “To clean up”在这里是“洁面，刷牙”的意思；让自己变干净就是“to clean up”。

1 admit   

vt.承认，供认；准许…进入，准许...加入

• He will never admit to me that he is lazy.他不会向我承认他懒惰。
• If you're wrong,you should admit it.错了就要认账。

2 expression   

n.表达，表示，表现，表情，措辞，词句

参考例句：

• He looked at me without expression.他毫无表情地看着我。
• Her face was without expression.她的脸上没有表情。

3 means   

n.方法，手段，折中点，物质财富

参考例句：

• That man used artful means to find out secrets.那人使用狡猾的手段获取机密。
• We must get it done by some means or other.我们总得想办法把它干完。

4 verbs   

动词

参考例句：

• I have to swot up on phrasal verbs for a test tomorrow. 我不得不为明天的测验努力温习短语动词。
• Verbs that do not take object are called intransitive verbs. 不带宾语的动词称为不及物动词。
