More trouble at Japan's tsunami¹-damaged nuclear plant. Workers were evacuated² after smoke was spotted³ coming from the No.3 reactor⁴ unit. Plant officials have been battling to cool reactors⁵ and spent fuel pools to bring the radiation-leaking plant under control.

The US State Department says it has issued potassium iodide to its staff as a precaution against radiation. But officials say they have instructed embassy employees not to take the pills until instructed.

Meanwhile there are concerns about the food supply after some food and tap water near the plant tested for higher levels of radiation. "However these also are not levels that would immediately harm human health."

Shipping⁶ of some products including spinach⁷ and milk from some regions has been temporarily halted. The food concerns have merchants worried about their livelihood⁸. The temporary halt will only add to the economic toll⁹ of the earthquake and tsunami, now estimated at around 235 billion dollars.
