Civil rights leaders and celebrities¹ were among thousands of mourners who turned out for the funeral of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Brown was fatally shot August 9 by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. His funeral was held at a church in St.Louis.

Video posted online appears to show supporters of the Islamic State celebrating after capturing a major military base in northeastern Syria. This victory is part of the Jihadist group's aggressive push to consolidate² its hold on northern and eastern provinces along the Syria-Iraq border. It's the 3rd military base in the area to fall to extremists since last month.

And an American journalist kidnapped and held hostage for nearly 2 years by Al-Qaida-linked group in Syria is free. Peter Theo Curtis, who wrote under the byline³ Theo Padnos, was released less than a week after the beheading of American journalist James Foley by Islamic militants⁴.

And a young elk⁵ wandered into an office building in eastern Germany. Footage aired Germany television showed the animal standing⁶ calmly in a corridor after he apparently⁷ broke a glass door.
