1. Officials in Oakland say the death toll¹ has risen to 30 from a fire that tore through a warehouse² that housed an artist collective. Authorities say crews are starting to get deeper into the building and that as they advance, they expect to find more victims. 

2. A wooden box carrying Fidel Castro's ashes was placed by his brother and successor into a granite³ boulder⁴, as Cuba mourned the characteristic beard rebel seized control the caribbean island. The government barred independent coverage⁵ of the funeral,  later releasing a handful of photos and brief descriptions of the ceremony. 

3. Secretary of state John Kerry confirmed Sunday that state department officials have not been contacted by president-elect Donald Trump's transition team for background briefing before telephone calls with world leaders. Vice⁶ president-elect Mike Pence said Trump's phone call with Taiwan  leader was "A Courtesy Call" and has not necessarily reflected the shift of US policy. 

4. Tribal⁷ elders have asked the military veterans joining a large Dakota Access pipeline⁸ protest in encampment not to have confrontation⁹ with law enforcement officials. About 250 veterans gathered at a standing¹⁰ Rock reservation camp on Sunday for a meeting with protest organizers.
