Trump's secretary of state Rex Tillerson began his day of questioning, discussing topics like the Islamic State and Russia, while Trump's attorney general pick Jeff Sessions continued his second day with testimony⁴ from his own colleague.

Unexpected winter weather has hit Western states as emergency crews geared up for a more-snow-and-flooding Wednesday. An avalanche⁵ blocked a highway in Colorado, trapping three commercial trucks and sweeping⁶ down a tangle⁷ of trees and rocks in its path.

And researchers in China have identified a new species of gibbon in remote forest among the border of Burma and named it after a Star Wars character, Luke Skywalker. Scientists concluded they add a new species after studying the primate's distinctive⁸ brow and genetic⁹ analysis.
