Congressman¹ Elijah Cummings has died. The Democrat² from Baltimore passed away this morning due to complications from longstanding health challenges. Cummings was a sharecropper's son who became the powerful chairman of a U.S. House Committee investigating President Donald Trump³. He was 68.

Vice⁴ President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are in Turkey to mount an improbable push for a cease-fire in Syria. Their visit to Ankara comes a day after President Trump suggested the U.S. has no stake in defending Kurdish fighters once allied⁶ against the Islamic State group.

U.S. ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland is set to testify before House lawmakers conducting an impeachment⁷ inquiry⁸ into President Trump. Sondland is expected to say he was merely repeating President Trump's reassurances⁹ when he told another envoy¹⁰ there was no quid pro⁵ quo in the Trump administration's dealings with Ukraine.

And country music artists cried together and prayed together at an emotional CMT Artists of the Year awards show last night in Nashville. The show reflected the tight-knit community of artists who supported each other through success and loss.
