Lesson 30:The death of a ghost

Listen to the tape then answer the question below.
Why did the two brothers keep the secret?

For years, villagers believed that Endley Farm was hunted. The farm was owned by two brothers, Joe and Bob Cox. They employed a few farmhands, but no one was willing to work there long. Every time a worker gave up his job, he told the same story. Farm labourers said that they always woke up to find that work had been done overnight1. Hay2 had been cut and cowsheds had been cleaned. A farm worker, who stayed up all night claimed to have seen a figure cutting corn in the moonlight. In time, it became an accepted fact the Cox brothers employed a conscientious3 ghost that did most of their work for them.
No one suspected that there might be someone else on the farm who had never been seen. This was indeed the case. A short time ago, villagers were astonished to learn that the ghost of Endley had died. Everyone went to the funeral, for the 'ghost' was none other than Eric Cox, a third brother who was supposed to have died as a young man. After the funeral, Joe and Bob revealed4 a secret which they had kept for over fifty years.
Eric had been the eldest5 son of the family, very much older than his two brothers. He had been obliged6 to join the army during the Second World War. As he hated army life, he decided7 to desert his regiment8. When he learnt that he would be sent abroad, he returned to the farm and his father hid him until the end of the war. Fearing the authorities9, Eric remained in hiding after the war as well. His father told everybody that Eric had been killed in action. The only other people who knew the secret were Joe and Bob. They did not even tell their wives. When their father died, they thought it their duty to keep Eric in hiding. All these years, Eric had lived as a recluse10. He used to sleep during the day and work at night, quite unaware11 of the fact that he had become the ghost of Endley. When he died, however, his brothers found it impossible to keep the secret any longer.

Further notes on the text
1.The Wayle is a small river that cuts across the park near my home.
地点状语 near my home修饰 the park。
2.I like sitting by the Wayle on fine afternoons.
3.…it went towards a passing boat.……
4.Some people on the bank called out to the man in the boat…
I heard someone calling out for help.
Mary called out to her father, but he was too far away and couldn't hear her.
5.The ball struck him so hard that he nearly fell into the water.
The book was so interesting that I read it in two hours.
The box is so heavy that I can't lift it without your help.
He ran so quickly that no one could catch up with him.
It rained so hard that we couldn't go out.
6.I turned to look at the children, but there weren't any in sight…
(1)any代替 any children。
(2) in sight表示“看得见”、“在视野之内”,反义词为 out of sight:
No bus is in sight.
Mary came in sight when I was waiting for Lucy.
In the afternoon, we came in sight of the village.
George left the store and was soon out of sight.

Grammar in use
a,the,some与any的用法
There are some eggs in the fridge.
There is some milk in the fridge.
There isn't any meat in the fridge.
He came from the United States of America.
John lives in London which is on the Thames.
在表示世界上独一无二的东西时,通常要加定冠词the:The moon is very pale tonight.
The sun is bright today.
在 such后面用 a/an,可以起强调作用:
