The swollen¹ Mississippi River is giving residents of at least one Louisiana town something ever reprieved². Evacuations that were supposed to become mandatory³ in Butte La Rose today had been put on hold. Most have already left, but officials there now say the Mississippi River might not get as high as feared; they put evacuations off for a couple of days. Other towns are bracing⁴ for flooding. Carl Kraemer, the emergency management director of Morgan City, is hopping⁵ for the best.

"The amount of work that we have done in this—the last two weeks is almost unheard of, but we got the crews—our city crews in here. We got National Guard crews in here, and we really did a lot of work to bring..."
