美国习惯用语:542 stomping ground

我们今天要学的习惯用语都表示特定的地点。第一个是：stomping¹ ground。Stomping这个词的意思是用脚使劲地踩踏，ground当然是地，那么习惯用语stomping ground是什么意思呢？

从字面看是被踩来踩去的一片土地。Stomping ground在两百来年前指牛马聚集的场地，人们常常爱把牲口赶去那儿，赶集作买卖或者会朋友谈天等等，于是这片土地被牛马的蹄子践踏得结结实实的了。

当年的美国人有百分之八十过着乡居生活，stomping ground是他们常来常往的好去处。这样就产生了stomping ground这个习惯用语。

人们有时把这个习惯用语中的ground加词尾-s, 成为复数grounds，另外也有人在stomping ground前面加old。然而不论是stomping ground，还是stomping grounds, 或者old stomping ground，意思都一样。

今天要学的第二个习惯说法是：hangout。 Hang out作为动词短语有“闲逛”的意思，就是闲来没事跟几个朋友一起毫无目的地东游西逛。但是我们今天要学的习惯说法却是复合名词hangout，它的意思和动词短语hang out有关联。我们听个例子来体会它的含义吧。

例句-2：When I was in college, our most popular hangout was the tavern⁴ in the Student Union⁵. The food was cheap and not too bad, drinks were cheap and it was a great place to hang out with women students without spending much money.

他说：我上大学时，我们最爱去的地方是学生会里的小酒店。那儿的食品便宜，而且质量也不差，饮料价钱也便宜。那可真是个跟女生一起消磨时光而花费不大的好去处。

显然这段话里的名词hangout是和朋友相聚、消磨时光的地点，而且往往指象学生俱乐部之类非正式的场所。

今天要学的第三个习惯用语是： neck of the woods。 Neck of the woods是个相当古老的习惯用语，约莫出现在两百来年前。当时的美国人正往美洲大陆的西部迁移，开辟更美好的新生活。他们到了中意的地点就砍伐树木，在森林里开出农场来。

当时他们把在森林里开辟出来的安家落户的小小地带称为neck of the woods。 Neck of the woods沿用至今意义有了转变，如今它指什么呢？我们听个例子来领会吧。说话的人要描绘自己的故乡。

例句-3：My neck of the woods is a little town in Kansas, out in the middle of wheat fields. I was born and grew up there, and didn't know anywhere else until I went away to college. I still go back once a year just to see my mother and dad.

他说：我的老家在堪萨斯州的一个小乡镇外，四周围绕着麦田，我在那儿出生长大，直到上大学才认识别的地方。我现在还是每年回老家一次，看望妈妈、爸爸。

显然这里的习惯用语neck of the woods指某人出生和成长的老家或者故乡。 Neck of the woods也能泛指面积不大的邻近地区或者地段，例如在这句话里： We were down in your neck of the woods last weekend， 这句话的意思是上周末我们到你那一带去了。
