Respect
In a society that values independence and growth, those in authority often need to earn the people's respect.  Respect is given to those in authority based on their ability, instead of an automatic response to how old, wise or respectable¹ they are.  Older people are often seen as outdated².  Young people are more likely to have clearer ideas about what the future might hold.  Nowadays, many American adults would rather ask their children instead of their parents for advice before making a decision!

1 respectable   

n.品格高尚的人；adj.值得尊重的，人格高尚的，不少的

• His savings were just enough to pay for a respectable funeral.他的存款刚好够办一个体面的葬礼。

2 outdated   

adj.旧式的，落伍的，过时的；v.使过时
