Jessie: Oh, I'm sure he can't have visitors.
Nurse: Yes, he can. He's down in X-ray, but he'll be back soon. Why don't you wait?
Jessie: Oh, I really don't want to bother him.
Nurse: You won't be bothering him. I'm sure he'd love to see you.
(A man in pajamas¹ walks down the hall pulling his I.V. along behind him. Jessie starts to panic.)
Jessie: Gosh, I'd love to , I really would. But I'm on such a tight schedule.
Nurse: Would you like me to call down there and see when he---
Jessie: No! (Attempting calmness.) No, thanks a lot, but I really just wanted to drop this off. I'll be back soon, though. Real soon. Tell him that, okay?
Nurse (he's seen this before): Right. Real soon.
Jessie(to the people): I know. I know. What a wuss. But have you ever been to a cancer ward²? Please reserve judgment³ until you have.
Exercise: Turn either one of the three mini-dialogues into ONE descriptive narrative⁴. Use only indirect speech.

1 pajamas
