Marriott International agreed to buy Starwood Hotels &Resorts Worldwide for $12.2 billion in cash and shares. Starwood had reportedly been in talks with another suitor, Hyatt; Chinese hotel operators¹ were also keen². The deal will create the world’s biggest hotel company: between them Marriott (whose brands include Ritz-Carlton and Renaissance) and Starwood(Sheraton, Le Méridien) have 5,500 hotels with 1.1m rooms.
