More than one-third of the coral in the northern and central parts of the Great Barrier Reef is dead or dying, scientists said. The chief culprit for the mass bleaching¹ of the past two months is high water temperatures—partly from the El Ni?o weather phenomenon, but aggravated² by global warming. A cyclone³ lowered temperatures in the reef’s southern part.
