I'm wrong, that dirty yellow midst hanging over the rugged⁴ expanse of mountains is not low line clouds, it’s smoke, the smoke from foreign fire started by the Algerian army to drive the Islamist militants⁵ from their hideouts in the thick wood and caves in the Barba Mountains. But burning the forest is futile⁶, there’s always more vegetation, more impenetrable hillside to run to. As we approached the flaming forests, I noticed ancient olive trees consumed by fire. These are the lifeblood of the Barba people living in the villages that cling to every mountain top. One old man, a beekeeper explained how all of his beehives have been burnt. "When I asked the army why they destroyed my livelihood⁷, they said they wouldn’t have done it if I told them where the Islamists were hiding. How can the military expect us to help, when they take our life away from us" he asked. And the military certainly needs the help of the local population, especially in the wild Cabilla region, home of the Barba people and current feat⁸ of the Islamists. Insecurity has increased in Algeria since the beginning of this year when the militants relaunched themselves with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Since joining the Al Qaeda franchise⁹, Algeria's Islamists have changed their tactics, they have become most sophisticated, carrying out bloody¹⁰ suicide attacks and setting off bumps simultaneously¹¹ in many different parts of the country. They post slake¹² internet video to the young man prepared to kill themselves for their faith. The latest, a film of the man who blew up himself and about ten other people at the Lacdaria army barracks shows the rosy¹³ chick to use, posing in the forest with a rocket launcher as if it were a new toy.

The Barba Mountains are in many ways, the most unlikely heaven for Islamic extremists. You know you have arrived in Barbra country when all along the roadside; you see piles of empty beer bottles and cans. The higher you climb the narrow snaky road, the more green bottles in the verges¹⁵. And even more incredible is the bar at the top of the mountain run by a long haired wild-eyed Barba, nicknamed after the Hollywood muscleman, John Claude Van Dam. He is carved in genius clarion¹⁶ after the forest, where people conceit¹⁷ and enjoy their beer surrounded by lashed¹⁸ green vegetation.

For the more adventurers, he is even building a drinking platform at the top of the tree. Men lolled around in various stages of liberation.

Empty bottles scattered¹⁹ all over the place. One man joked about how we were drinking beer under the very beards of Islamists. I confessed I did not really believe we were anywhere near militants hideout, that atmosphere was far too carefree and relaxed and I couldn’t imagine how this man could live alone selling alcohol of all things right under the beards of the Islamist. But just a few days after my visit, a military patrol was ambushed²⁰ in plain daylight just four hundred meters from the bar. One soldier was killed and two others badly injured. Eye witnesses said Van Dam continued to serve beer during the attack although most of his clients ran away as soon they heard the gun shots and other explosions. It seems the Barbas and the Islamists are prepared to tolerate each other at presence because their hatred²¹ for the Government is greater than their hatred for each other. The enemy of my enemy is my friend! And the Islamists know better than to attack the Baber's civilian’s fears clan²² loyalties²³ would see the fundamentalists surf the mountains if they start to kill the locals.

For now, Al Qaeda and the Islamic Maghrebs is largely confining itself to attacking the military although there have been some exceptions like the recent bombing of an amusement accolade²⁴ which killed two children and maimed several others. The Barber region is the focal point for the army's battle against the militants, as well as the burning forests as a military convoy²⁵ slandering²⁶ past and columns of nervous looking soldiers watching up the mountains to hunt down the perpetrators of recent attacks. Helicopters stretched the hillsides and there were daily newspaper reports of military triumph against the insurgents²⁷. But the authorities are not winning the war against the militants. Prime Minister, Abdelaziz Belkhadem, has recently reassured²⁸ the population that the Algerian Government has perfect control over the security situation and that terrorism is on the verge¹⁴ of being eradicated²⁹. He is wrong. If anything, what the Prime Minister described as terrorism is on the increase in Algeria, it is difficult to see how the Government can win, especially on the Barber Mountains by pursuing his scorched³⁰ earth policy and destroying people's livelihood in the process. The army has alienated³¹ the local population. And without their support, the military will never be able to control this vast, unruly expanse of unforgiving terrain³². And Al Qaeda and the Maghreb will remain in ruthless pursuit of its ultimate aim; to destroy those they describes as enemies of Allah and to establish an Islamic Republic in Algeria.
