Graffiti in Barcelona

THE HOST: Time now for our trend track down. This week brand consultant2, Sara Keeny is in Barcelona, Spain. Sara, what are the latest trends there?

SARA KEENY: Well, there are several things that are going on. One of things that I would like to talk about is the graffiti scene that is emerging3 and has been emerging in Barcelona. The street art or graffiti is nothing new to major cities like New York City or London or Paris. But in Barcelona it is fairly new. It's something that just keeps growing stronger and stronger.

THE HOST: And what's unique about the style of graffiti that's taking place in Barcelona?

SARA KEENY: Essentially4, it's attracting a lot of artists from all over the world especially, mostly from Europe. The reason being that because it is an emerging street art scene here the police have caught on but maybe not caught on as much as they have in New York City to stop it. So there is still quite a bit of freedom as far as being able to do art in the street and what you see really influences the style of art that the artists are doing because one they have more time so they're creating in more of a relaxed environment, they don't have to be painting with two hands and looking over their shoulder to see if the police are coming. And there is a second aspect is that the paint here for actually a lot of people especially coming from larger markets it's quite a bit cheaper so the artists will buy their paints here and splurge a bit more and this makes artwork more colourful.

THE HOST: Can you just describe a little bit more what it looks like?

SARA KEENY: I can, yeah. You'll see the art on basic walls, buildings and an artist that is actually well-known internationally is called Miss Fan. She's French actually and her style is very characteristic because she has a very feminine5 style and it goes against most graffiti. All of her characters are girls. It's very sexy, almost like a delicate illustration type of style. She normally has very provocative girls with pouting6 lips and they're holding either like a soft bunny rabbit or a fox and it's very sweet and almost pornographic or sensual at the same time.

THE HOST: Wow! It sounds beautiful!

SARA KEENY: It is. It is. Really. I'm a big fan of hers.
