Party in Buckingham Palace

As part of the celebrations for her eightieth birthday, Queen Elizabeth has welcomed two thousand-children -- the lucky winners of a national ballot -- to a special garden party at Buckingham Palace here in London. Characters from British children's literature and television were among the guests - with Paddington Bear, Thomas the Tank Engine and Harry2 Potter all putting in an appearance. Our Royal correspondent Peter Hunt was there too and he sent this report:

The children temporarily took over the palace, well, the garden at least. Bob The Builder was just one of the attractions. The guests, all 2000 of them chosen at random3 by ballot couldn't quite believe their luck.

'I'm really amazed I'm here. It's brilliant.'

'It's a dream come true. It's an honour to be here.'

'I think it's the best thing I've ever been to. We're going into places that nearly nobody has ever seen before.'

'And it's a once in a lifetime experience.'

'Welcome everybody to Buckingham Palace!'

The special pantomime show featured such diverse characters as Harry Potter and baddies like Captain Hook who had stolen the Queen's handbag. Some corgis were used to help try and find it. 'Come on, sniff4 sniff, come on then darlings. There we are …Find Mummy's handbag.'

When the Queen, at the end of this latest event to mark her 80th birthday took to the stage, she spoke5 of how it had been a most memorable6 occasion.

'I'm delighted to have my handbag back. I do like happy endings. Ladies and gentlemen and children everywhere. British children's literature has been for many years an extraordinary success story …'
