Interview with Jeff Goldblum
Reporter: The Hollywood actor star of films like Independence Day, Jurassic Park and The Fly, currently making his British stage debut7, in the new production of David Mamet's 1988 comedy, Speed the Plough. Considering what we've just heard the subject matters quite out, the satire on tinsel town, the greed, the trivia and brashness of modern day Hollywood. Goldblum starts with fellow actor Kevin Spacey, they play two Hollywood producers, Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox. Goldblum's character Bobby facing a real dilemma. Should he keep turning out high grossing draws to make a movie based on a book about killer8 radiation, a film that might actually mean something for a change. So, how is he faring in London? The BBC Mark Lawson caught up with him and asked him how London theaters goes, compared with American ones.
Jeff Goldblum: Well you know this is the first time I've been on stage in London. I've made a couple movies here but uh, first time on stage and so far I don't feel anything particularly different. It feels like we're getting a youngish crowd. Uh this is a beautiful unique theater and the play works in a very energized9 kind of way like you saw, and people are, I think, into it, and um expressive about it.
Mark Lawson: It's also, I was very struck watching it last night, the body language is tremendous. You and Kevin Spacey, you have little gestures, you even have little dances the two of you that they the characters do, so, you, you, you've worked on that quite a lot I think of it…
Jeff Goldblum: Well, they've sort of organically, they say they've sort of evolved, we've been working intensely for the last month or so now. And he doesn't write many things in the plays stage direction wise, he gives you the lines, and that's about it. But, uh, Kevin you know, is an eight degree black belt actor, it's like a master class everything he rehearse.
Mark Lawson: Some actors have told me in the past that David Mamet, he's hard to learn, uh, because, and hard to play because it's so fast and the dialogue is often breaking off and interrupting, have you found that playing it?
Jeff Goldblum: It's certainly challenge yeah, to learn it first of all, a lot of intricate cues and impulses that you have to pick up from the other guy, little interrupted sentences and fast, bob bit bip ba ba bah, and it can't be messy, I think you have to learn it meticulously and then render it as if it's a spontaneous improvisation10. But it allows you to take off, you know, you sort of, just by doing it, it takes you somewhere.
Mark Lawson: It's some, it's a very savage11 comedy about Hollywood. It's actually these two guys, played by you and Kevin Spacey, they're trying to make one with this stupid movie and they're about to make and even more stupid movie instead, do you um?
Jeff Goldblum: Possibly.
Mark Lawson: Are you, you, you, you may believe in the radiation movie that...
Jeff Goldblum: Well, part of me wants to remain a little cryptic about the plot because it's enjoyable in many ways but the other part of your question, it occurs to me that the play is intended to be a bit ambiguous and allows the audience to form their own ideas about it. Yes, and there a couple of pieces of material in it, one; yes, it's certainly meant to sound like it's going to be crash and whether or not very good and this other piece of material that comes up, is something a little more fanciful and artful and ambitious but I think that there's certainly a case to be made for the fact the David Mamet intended that piece of material within the play to be taken seriously and to have at least some substance in it. In fact I was reading and doing a little research, that book that's in the play, was a book that he was actually writing and I know now as I've read a little bit about him and I've met him a little bit, I think he's a serious fellow and a fellow not uninterested in wisdom literature, wisdom thinking, big questions in life, uh, religion in some ways, and the big question of who are we and it's not what this piece of material deals with, and even though certain passages of it, as they are quoted, can be made to sound a little funny, ah, no it's up for grabs as to what the nature of that book is.
Mark Lawson: What I wonder though, is that, I mean you might probably agree, Hollywood doesn't come out for fantastically from this play and you've been on the other end of it, you've been on the end of being sent scripts by producers of that kind, so is there a certain pleasure for you as an actor in seeing Hollywood treated that way?
Jeff Goldblum: Oh, sure, I get a kick out of reading Mamet and he has some wicked and savage things to say about the materialistic world that is at least partly Hollywood, yeah, it's fun for me, those characters ripe to be make fun of in some way and looked at, X rayed.
Mark Lawson: There are people in Hollywood, who would, if they had their way, you would now be making The Fly 10 and Jurassic Park 15, I mean that is the kind of thing they do to actors, and they just try to get you to do the same thing, over and over again.
Jeff Goldblum: Well I guess so, you just find your own way, and I just keep doing what my stomach and gizzard tells me am interested in.
Mark Lawson: But there's also, but in terms of the kinds of things you're offered, your physique, and that does not effect me, it was obviously in the tall guy, because it was there in the title but there are certain things you wouldn't be offered because you are, you're so tall, you have a certain manic intensity12. You're not going to offered many romantic leads, are you, I think.
Jeff Goldblum: Well, I don't know, first of all let me take all that question, point by point. First of all I'm not circus tall, freakish tall, I'm 6ft 4, which is even if you go to a store is on a...
Mark Lawson: Ah you, you're an inch taller than me.
Jeff Goldblum: Well, Congratulations, we're both, I think we're both, you know, fine large men and you know, we could fit in doors and stuff and, no, I think, I think we're, I think what men wouldn't want to be just about our height, I think we're at the perfect manly13 height, ah, lets see, what else about that? Oh well, oh, manic intensity. Oh, you know, I've done a lot of kinds of parts and um, some are slow, some are fast and some, you know, all sorts of different things. I don't know, I've been given a lot of a chance to play a lot of romantic things, and who knows what'll occur from this point on, I don't know.
