  In my early days at Corrie he was like a surrogate dad to me and Alan. I'll never forget how he and Liz guided Alan and I through those first years on the programme. In fact my fussy¹ was with Bill and assumed doctrines² he made what could have been a very decent experienced men experienced farmer into a welcoming and memorable³ dine. In those early days he taught Alan and me how to be professional and good to others. Some words of wisdom he shared with us that we still live by are 'Be good to those you meet on the way up as you'll surely come across them on the way down'. And another of his mantras was 'if I'm not early, I'm late'. He felt that we should try to live by these rules. It had always stood him in good stead. Bill was totally devoted⁴ to his family. His wife Ali and their children, Carl and Sara, his seven grandchildren and his great grandson were absolute his world. We felt like his other family, albeit⁵ part of his professional life, but he was always there for us and for that we are truly grateful.
