Last time we learned¹ a short sentence: Don't tell a soul. which is used to warn somebody not to discuss something private with anyone else. If you ask somebody not to tell a soul about something, maybe his answers are: "My lips are sealed. ' " I will keep my mouth shut. '" I am not one to kiss and tell. " "I will keep quiet about it. " and so on. However, I have a perfect answer you don't know. Want to know? If so, please listen to the following simple situational dialogue and I'm sure you can get it. A : Actually I only have a high school education. B : Your secret's safe with me. I thought you'd been to university.

【答疑解惑】

It is " Your secret is safe with me." 直译为：你的秘密和我在一起是安全的。This means "I won't tell anyone." It's a way of saying that the speaker can be trusted. It's similar to saying "我会替你保密的" in Chinese. If we want to express someone won't tell something else to others , it's fine that we just remember this sentence structure ：（something) is safe with (somebody). 从这个短语中，我们可以举一反三，如果我们要说某人替某事保密，我们可以用这个结构：（something) is safe with (somebody).

We should pay attention to the following places. 1 have a It's pronounced as [h?v?] in my speech. 【点拨】have弱读为 [h?v], have 是以辅音[v]结尾，a 的发音是元音，进行连读则为[v?]. 【文法】only 是副词，作状语放在实义动词have的前面，句子中有2个副词都是作状语，不能并排放于实义动词前，这个句子不能是 I actually only have a high school education. 如果没有only, actually可以放在实义动词的前面。I actually have a high school education. 因为 actually 通常放于句首，表示强调，因此就把actually 通常放于句首。High school是名词性短语修饰剧中的education.

【翻译】我会替你保密的。

【关键词】In this sentence "safe"is the key word means "protected". Here's phrase"be safe from somebody or something" which means "be protected from any danger or harm". 意思是：免遭受某人或者是某事的危险和伤害。For example : They aimed to make the country safe from terrorist⁶ attacks. 他们力图使国家免遭恐怖分子袭击。

3 I thought you'd been to university.

【翻译】我还以为你上过大学了。

【文法】这是一个含有宾语从句的复合句。主句是：I thought, 从句是： you'd been to university，在这个从句中，to university是介词短语作表语. 既然有主句和从句，我们就要注意主句与从句的时态要呼应。这个宾语从句用的是过去完成时，因为说B上过大学在A想之前，而想用的是过去式，因此从句就要用过去完成时。
