 And for Johnny rook, the wait is over. Because some of the world's greatest wanderers are heading his way. They've been traveling the globe for months, even years. Only one thing can bring their wanderings to a halt, none of them can give birth at sea. From around the southern pole, nomads¹ are now converging² on these shards³ of rock, known as the Falklands. They will give up the lives they know best on wind or waves for the sake of their young.

 

 

 

After months of migrating through frigid⁴ southern waters, up to 25 miles a day, rockhopper penguins⁵ torpedo⁶ in for a hard landing. These sleek⁷ hardy⁸ birds must abandon the sea to reproduce. Then they are the true behemoths. Back from ten months of hunting off the Antarctic ice sheet, the massive southern elephant seal humps ashore⁹. He has to make a stand here where the females are returning or lose his chance to breed. He is 4 tons, of raw sexual aggression¹⁰.
