（一） While my father was an officer of the British army in south Africa, we lived in a two-storied house. One evening my father and sister and I were sitting together. He was opposite the window. I suddenly noticed that he was turning very pale. I sat still, for I did not want to frighten1 my sick sister. Soon father said in a calm voice," Kate and Joan, a friend of mine is coming here to see me this evening, and I wish to be alone with him. Will you go up to your own room?" We obeyed, went to our room and closed the door. Soon I heard a sound like that of a door burst2 in, and then a climb of feet. They were hurrying up the narrow3 stairs. Fearing that there was some danger near, I seized4 the pistol5(手枪)on the table. Then I heard my father cry out," For God's sake(快!), child, open the door. "I did so. To my horror(恐怖),I saw, over my father's shoulder, a gorilla6(大猩猩),the worst enemy of the soldier in Africa. He was running after my father. I raised the pistol and fired. The animal fell backwards7 with an angry loud cry. Father took the still smoking8 pistol from my hand, and fired another shot9, which killed the gorilla. It happened that father had sent us upstairs because he thought he would be able to lock the door－which was twenty feet away－before the animal reached it. 1 frighten

2 burst

• She suddenly burst into song.她突然唱起歌来。

3 narrow   

n.狭窄部份，海峡，隘路；adj.狭窄的，精密的，有限的；v.变窄，使...狭窄

参考例句：

• The bridge is too narrow for two cars to pass.这桥太窄，并排通不过两辆车。
• The captain sailed his ship through the narrow channel.船长驾驶他的船穿过了狭窄的航道。

4 seized   

抓住( seize的过去式和过去分词 )； 逮捕； 捉拿； 俘获

参考例句：

• Another fit of coughing seized him. 他那咳嗽又一次发作了。
• He seized power in a military coup in 1997. 他在 1997 年的军事政变中夺取了政权。

5 pistol   

n.手枪

参考例句：

• He drew his pistol and aimed at the enemy soldier.他拔出枪对准敌兵。
• The escaped criminal fell at the sound of a pistol.手枪一响，逃犯应声倒下。

6 gorilla   

n.大猩猩，暴徒，打手

参考例句：

• I was awed by the huge gorilla.那只大猩猩使我惊惧。

7 backwards   

adv.往回地，向原处，倒，相反，前后倒置地

参考例句：

8 smoking   

n.吸烟，抽烟；冒烟

参考例句：

9 shot   

n.炮弹，射击，射手；v.射击，发出，发芽；vbl.射击，发出，发芽
