A long time before I was born, my Grandma and grandpa moved into the house on Beechwood Avenue. They had a young family-of 4 little girls .The little girls Slept in the attic in a big feather bed.It was cold there on winter night. Grandma put hot bricks underd the covers at the foot of the bed to keep the little girls warm.
During the Great Depression,work was Hard to find,so Grandpa did whatever jobs he could.He dug ditches during the week and on Weekend he and Grandma dug a garden to grow some of their own food.
The house on Beechwood Avenue had a big Front yard with shade trees and fruite trees.In the middle of the yard was a water pump where the four little girls pumped water for cooking, cleaning and watering the garden.On one side of the yard,Grandma and Grandpa planted tomatoes,beans,squash,cucumbers,peppers and strawberries to feed their growing family. They planted Roses geraniums lilacs and irises on the other Side of the yard,around the statue of the Blessed Mother.
Eveqbody worked to keep the garden growing.All summer long,the family ate food from the garden and enjoyed the beautiful flowers.Grandma put up strawberry jam,tomatoes,beans,peppers,pears and peaches in canning jam.They were good to eat through the long winter.
The family grew up, and before too many years had passed,the grandchildren came to visit. Grandma and Grandpa still planted their garden every spring.Everyone still enjoyed the good food from the garden and always took some home.
Grandchilden grow up,and grandparents grow older.It became harder for Grandma and Grandpa to keep up the garden. So they made it a little smaller.There was still plenty to eat from the garden and lovely flowers to enjoy.
Then one sunmmer when Grandpa was eighty-nine years old, all he could do was watch from his lawn chair as the vegetables grew and the roses bloomed.Summer slowly faded,and Grandpa died before it was time to bring in the harvest.
It was a lonely Winter for Grandma. She sat near the window,looking out at the yard and wondering if she could plant the garden in the spring.It would be hard to care for it by herself. When spring came,she planted only a little garden.
One sunny day in the early summer, Grandma heard a commotion in the front yard and looked out the window to see a frightening sight a gigantic swarm of bees filled the air between two tall trees. There was thousands of bees in the air,so many that the swarm reached the tree-tops!The buzzingsound was tremendous.Grandma watched as the bees made their way into a hole up in one of the trees.Before long,everyone of those bees had disappeard into its new home.
Grandma wondered what in the world she Could do.Should she hair someone to get rid of bees?That would cost more than she could afford.She decided to wait and think it over.
During the next few days,the bees were busy mading their own business.Grandma could always see a few bees buzzing in and out around the opening high in the tree.Before long,she decided the bees won't bother anyone,so she went about her business and didn't give them any other thought.
That summer,Grandma's little garden grew and grew.The neighborns would stop to admire the huge crop of vegetables and puzzle over their own gardens weren't doing well.No matter,because Grandma had enough give some away.Of course,everyone who came to visit was treated to a meal of good things from the garden.
One day,Grandma's brother Frank visited from Arizona.As Granndma made Frank a delicious lunch of squash pan cakes and home made apple sauce,she told him the story about the swam of bees.
Frank said，"in Arizona, the famers often hired beekeepers to set up beehives near their fields.The bees pollinated the crops and helped them to grow."
That was when Grandma realized that her bees had helped with her garden all summer..
"So that's why my little garden had such a big crop!"she exclaimed.
From that Time on,Grandma always believed that since Grandpa couldn't be there to help her that summer,he had sent the bees to take his place and make Grandma's little garden grow and grow…

多年过去,孩子们长大,孙子孙女们也来到了世上。奶奶和爷爷仍然每年春天都耕种花园。人人都能分享花园种出的好东西,也总能带上一些回家里。
孙子孙女们长大了,爷爷、奶奶年迈古稀。维护花园花去他们更多的精力,所以他们缩小了些花园的面积。但里面种出来的食物还足够吃,花朵也还招人喜爱。
等到爷爷八十九岁的那个夏天,他只能坐在草地的椅子上,看蔬菜长大,玫瑰开花。夏曰渐渐消逝,爷爷在丰收前就去世了。
对奶奶来说,这是个寂寞的冬天。她坐在窗边,望着外边的院子,考虑着来年春天还要不要耕种花园。只靠她自己来打理太难了些。当春天来到时,她只稍微种了一点。
初夏的一天,阳光灿烂,奶奶听到前院传来一阵骚动声,她看出窗外,看到可怕的一幕。两棵大树上满满缀着大团大团的蜜蜂。空中还飞舞着成千上万只,多不胜数的蜂群一直排到树梢上!嗡嗡声不绝于耳。奶奶看见这些蜜蜂先后钻进一棵树上高高的树洞中。很快,所有的蜜蜂都搬进新家,消失了。
奶奶不禁发愁起来。她是否该请人清走这些蜜蜂呢?但是她根本支付不起费用。于是她决定等一等,再想想办法。
随后几天,蜜蜂忙碌个不停。奶奶总能看到有一些蜂儿从高高的树洞里嗡嗡地飞进飞出。不久,她看出蜜蜂并无妨碍,于是自顾自地干活,不再理会它们。
那年夏天,奶奶的小花园硕果累累。邻居们都驻足羡慕里面生长丰盛的蔬菜,纳罕怎么自己花园的长势就没有这么喜人。没关系,因为奶奶有好多可以送人。登门来访的人当然都有花园里的美昧来招待。
一天,奶奶的弟弟法兰克从亚利桑那州前来拜访。奶奶给他做了一顿香喷喷的午饭,有南瓜饼,有自制的苹果酱,她还把蜜蜂的故事告诉了法兰克。
法兰克说:"在亚利桑那,农夫们常常雇请养蜂人在农田附近搭蜂箱。蜜蜂授粉有助于庄稼成长。"
奶奶才意识到,原来是这些蜜蜂在夏季助成了花园的丰收。
"所以我的小花园才有了大丰收!"她大声地说道。
从那时开始,奶奶便相信是因为爷爷那年夏天没能亲自帮她,才派了蜜蜂到这里,让奶奶的小花园欣欣向荣。

Once a king made the unfortunate mistake of joking about the large nose of an enchantress who lived in the forest. Instantly the enchantress appeared before the King. Fixing her angry eyes on him and wagging her finger before his face, she said, "There will come a time when you shall have a son. This child shall be born with an enormous nose, a nose even bigger than your big mouth, a nose that will remain stuck upon your son's face until the moment he realizes what an ridiculous nose he indeed has."
"If my son's nose is going to be as long as all that," the king thought to himself, "he would always see it or feel it; at least, if he is not blind or without hands. Certainly by the time he walks and talks he'll realize he has an unusually large nose. At that moment it will be gone. This is not a matter for much concern."
Soon the Queen had a little son, who was named Andre. Little Prince Andre had large blue eyes, the prettiest eyes in the world, and a sweet little mouth, but, alas! His nose was so huge that it covered half his face. The Queen was inconsolable when she saw this great nose, but her ladies assured her that it was not really as large as it looked; that it was a Roman nose, and you had only to open any history to see that every hero has a large nose. The Queen, who was devoted to her baby, was pleased with what they told her, and when she looked at baby Andre again, his nose did not seem to her quite so large.
The Prince was brought up with great care. As soon as he could speak, they told him all sorts of dreadful stories about people who had short noses. No one was allowed to come near him whose nose did not more or less resemble his own. The courtiers, to get into favor with the Queen, took to pulling their noses several times every day to make them grow longer. But, do what they would, their noses were nothing in comparison with the Prince's.
When he grew older he learned history. Whenever any great prince or princess was spoken of, his teachers took care to tell him that they had very long noses. His room was hung with pictures, all of people with large noses. The Prince grew up convinced that a long nose was a feature of great beauty.
When his twentieth birthday was past, the Queen thought it was time that he married. She commanded that the portraits of several princesses should be brought for him to see, and among the others was a picture of the Princess Rosebud.
Now Princess Rosebud was the daughter of a great king, and would some day possess several kingdoms herself, but Prince Andre had not a thought to spare for anything of that sort, he was so much struck with her presence in the portrait. The Princess, whom he thought quite charming, had however, a saucy little nose, which in her face, was the prettiest thing possible, but it was a cause of great embarrassment to the courtiers, who had got into a habit of laughing at little noses. Sometimes they found themselves laughing at her nose before they had time to think. This did not do at all before the Prince, who quite failed to see the joke, and actually banished two of his courtiers who had dared to mention disrespectfully Princess Rosebud's tiny nose!
The others, taking warning from this, learned to think twice before they spoke, much less laughed. One courtier even went so far as to tell the Prince that, though it was quite true that no man could be worth anything unless he had a long nose, still, on a woman's face a smaller nose could be most attractive.
The Prince made that courtier a splendid present as a reward for this good news, and at once sent ambassadors to ask Princess Rosebud's hand in marriage. The King, her father, gave his consent. Prince Andre, in his anxiety to see the Princess, traveled many miles to meet her. At last, when the moment had arrived for him to kiss her hand, to the horror of all who stood by, the enchantress appeared as suddenly as a flash of lightning! Grabbing up Princess Rosebud, she whirled the princess out of sight!
The Prince declared that he would not return to his kingdom until he had found her again. Refusing to allow any of his courtiers to follow him, he mounted his horse and rode away.
As the Prince journeyed from town to town, he thought all the people he passed must be mad, for all they talked about was the size of his nose. He couldn't understand why they thought his nose so big, and assumed they were jealous because they suffered with such terribly small noses. Thus passed several years.
The enchantress had shut Princess Rosebud up in a palace of crystal, and had hidden this palace in a remote corner of the woods. Still, the Prince eventually stumbled upon that remote corner. One day, in the reflection of the crystal walls he caught the image of his bride, and felt joy extreme. The Prince set to work with all his might to try to break her prison; but in spite of all his efforts he failed utterly. In despair, he thought at least that he would try to get near enough to speak to Princess Rosebud. On her part, the Princess stretched out her hand through a crack in the crystal walls that he might kiss it. But turn which way he might, he never could raise her hand to his lips, for his long nose always prevented it. For the first time he realized how long his nose really was, and exclaimed:
"Well, it must be admitted that my nose really is quite big!"
That instant the crystal prison flew into a thousand splinters.
"Foolish prince!" cried the angry enchantress. "It took all these years for you to realize what a ridiculous nose sits on your face! You've been so anxious to believe yourself perfect, you've refused to believe anything at all to the contrary, no matter how many people tried to tell you the truth! Not till the moment your nose stood in the way of your own interests did you reckon with it at all!" She laughed long and loud. "You foolish humans never cease to amaze me!" Then she vanished.
The Prince's nose had now returned to a normal size, the size it would have been if not for the enchantress'spell before he was born. He and Princess Rosebud were married as quickly as a grand wedding could be arranged. And in the years that followed, the Prince listened with but one ear to the flatteries of court attendants and kept his other ear open for honest remark. The Prince became known as a wise, thoughtful and admired King, and he ruled happily alongside his beloved wife, the Queen Rosebud.

1．何谓"rest room"?
某校的"教师休息室"被译为"Teachers' Rest Room"，一家"开心休闲屋"被译为"Happy Rest Room"。但"rest room"指的是"a public lavatory; cloakroom，公用盥洗室，衣帽间"。翻译这类型的场所可考虑"lounge"、"lobby"、"vestibule"或"foyer"。据说那所学校一个新来的外教有
一天火急火燎地冲进去，结果可以想象；如此想当然的字面翻译真是令人尴尬。
2．是"wineshop"还是"restaurant"？
一些"酒家"被译为"Wineshop"。在英文里，"wineshop"指的是"a cafe or tavern that specializes in serving wine"，专指供人喝酒、小憩之处，而中国人所说酒馆、酒楼、酒肆或酒家其实就是饭店、餐馆，英文都应是"restaurant"。
3．是"high school"还是"middle school"？
大多数有高中的"中学"被译为"middle school"，此词实际只指初中和高一的阶段，"a school between elementary school and high school."。有高中的中学应译为"high school"，用"middle school"其实是把自己将格了。
4．何来"purchase center"？
某"购物中心"英译为"???PURCHASE CENTER"，这是不规范的自创表达法。笔者查询牛津、剑桥、韦氏和朗文工具书都查不出"purchase center" 这样的词条，也咨询了英美人士和留学海外的学子，却都认为没有此说法。英语有"shopping center"，但所指购物场所很大，而且常在市郊；而该"购物中心"一则占地与规模都很小，二则地处市中心附近，因而也不宜这么翻，充其量就是"department store"（百货商店）。
5．"corporation"是什么？
某"国际机场集团公司"被译为"International Airport Group Corporation"。"corporation"指"Groups of persons authorized to act as an individual，eg，for Business purposes"，实际上该词本身有总公司的意味，因而"group"是多余的，有些总公司就是用这个词来表示。查一些影响较大的词典都没有发现"group corporation"，但有"group company"之说。
6．"square"，"plaza"分别指什么广场？
"square"意为"four-sided open area，eg，in a town，used as a garden or for recreation，or one enclosed by streets and buildings"，"buildings and street surroundings"，"blocks of buildings bounded by four streets; distance along one side of such a block"，所能指的广场大概相当于"天安门广场"、"五一广场"之类。现在新出现的众多的冠以"广场"名称的商业性质的写字楼群应该用"plaza",意为"a complex of stores, banks and movie theatres, etc"。目前我国广场，如"国贸广场"，"财经广场"，大都源于该词。
7．"store"、"shop"规模有多大？
"store"是一个卖东西的地方，"shops selling many varieties of goods""shop"意思相近，指"building or part of a building where goods are shown and sold retail"，规模并不大。目前，这两个词被滥用了，结果往往是把自己降格了，不能表达许多商业场所本身所具有的规模。多功能的商场，比如带有娱乐场所或银行分点的，宜用"plaza"或"mall"，后者指"a large retail complex containing stores and restaurants in adjacent buildings, or in a single large building"。当然，"store"在国外也有用来指很大的商店，有的建筑面积达二十几万平方米，服务员上班时穿溜冰鞋工作，但此时所用的是合成词"hyperstore"，目前我们国内能冠以该词的店铺可能还非常少，
8．是"city area"还是 "downtown area"？
路牌"市区"被英译为"City Area"。中文所说的"市区"指的是人口和房屋建筑比较集中的闹市区，而"city"指的是整个城市，既包括了闹市区，也包括了郊区。闹市区在国外称"Downtown Area"或"Downtown District"。
9．"出差"是on business还是on evection？
一个学生把"我的朋友去北京出差了。"译成 "My friend went to Beijing on evection."。查《英汉大词典》evection果然解释为"出差"，但仔细看，这是一个天文学词汇，是指"由于太阳的吸引而在月球轨道上引起的摄动"。我想这位学生大概是背诵GRE词汇时，只记中文解释，而不理解其真正意思造成的。其实，这句话只要译成; "My friend went to Beijing on business."就行了。此"出差"非彼"出差"，做翻译查词典，千万不可粗心大意，有时最好要看看其原文解释。

Daily, moderate drinking could almost halve the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia, according to new research.

The finding adds to a growing body of evidence for the health benefits of moderate drinking, which is already known to protect against heart disease and stroke

The study, published this week in The Lancet medical journal, also found that it doesn't seem to matter what people drink - the effect is the same.

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. The position of U.S. Attorney is one of the most important jobs in the Justice Department. U.S. Attorneys are appointed by the President, and they play a leading role in prosecuting crime and protecting the public.
In recent months, the Justice Department determined that new leadership in several of these positions would better serve the country. I strongly support the Attorney General in this decision. I also appreciate the hard work and service of the U.S. Attorneys who resigned. And I regret that their resignations have turned into a public spectacle.
Earlier this week, my Administration presented to Congress a reasonable way forward that balances the constitutional prerogatives of the Presidency with Congress's interest in learning more facts behind the decision to replace eight of the 93 U.S. Attorneys.Members of Congress now face a choice: whether they will waste time and provoke an unnecessary confrontation, or whether they will join us in working to do the people's business. We have many important issues before us. So we need to put partisan politics aside and come together to enact important legislation for the American people.
One of the most urgent legislative priorities is to fund our troops fighting the war on terror. I've asked Congress to pass an emergency war spending bill that gives our troops what they need, without strings and without delay. Instead, a narrow majority in the House of Representatives decided yesterday to make a political statement. The emergency war spending bill they voted for would cut the number of troops below the level our military commanders say they need to accomplish the mission. It would set an artificial timetable for withdrawal that would allow the enemy to wait us out. And it would require an army of lawyers to meet the conditions imposed by politicians in Washington who are substituting their own judgment for that of our generals in Iraq. I have made it clear that I will veto any such bill, and it is clear that my veto would be sustained.
To get the votes they needed to pass the bill, the Democrats who control the House also included billions of dollars in domestic and pork barrel spending for local congressional districts. This spending includes things like $74 million for peanut storage, $25 million for spinach growers, and a host of other spending items that have nothing to do with the war. Even with all this extra spending tacked on, the vote in the House was very close. This means that the Democrats do not have enough votes to override my veto.
By choosing to make a political statement and passing a bill they know will never become law, the Democrats in Congress have only delayed the delivery of the vital funds and resources our troops need. The clock is running. The Secretary of Defense has warned that if Congress does not approve the emergency funding for our troops by April 15, our men and women in uniform will face significant disruptions -- and so will their families. April 15 is also about the same time that Congress returns from its Easter vacation. Members of Congress need to put our troops first, not politics. They need to send me a clean bill, without conditions, without restrictions, and without pork.
This is an important moment for our Nation, and it is an important moment for the new Congress. My Administration has presented a reasonable way forward on the matter of U.S. Attorneys, and on ensuring that our men and women in uniform have the funds and the flexibility they need to win in Iraq. It is not too late for us to work together. For the good of our Nation, I ask the Democratic leaders in Congress to seize the opportunity before us and move beyond political statements to bipartisan action.

A such是形容词，用于形容词 名词结构之前：

B so是副词，用于副词和不带名词的形容词之前：

His speech went on for so long that people began to fall asleep．

有时为了表示强调，so位于句首。这时后面跟动词的倒装形式（参见第45节）：
