　　The actor, who also appeared in the 1997 Jim Carrey comedy "Liar¹ Liar," died on July 23 of natural causes in Sherman Oaks near Los Angeles, Hollywood trade weekly magazine "Variety" reported.

　　Born in New York and raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey², Mayer first rose to fame on the CBS series "The Dukes of Hazzard" in the 1980s. He played the role of Duke in 1982-83 season for 19 episodes, along with another actor Byron Cherry, as the replacement³ of the previous heroes who were involved in a contract dispute.

　　The dark-haired Mayer later voiced the same character in an animated⁴ spinoff "The Dukes" aired on CBS in 1983 and guested on the TV series "Star Trek⁵: Deep Space Nine."

　　He was married to three actresses, and the three marriages all ended in divorce. He was survived by three daughters, a grandson and a granddaughter.
