在维多利亚时代，饮茶在英美人士中间还没有形成习惯，所以当时用one's cup of beer或one's cup of wine表示“喜好；正中下怀；钟爱的事物；恰合口味”。后来饮茶风行开了，早点时人们甚至以饮茶代替喝咖啡。有钱人家还要来一次下午茶(afternoon tea)。但每个人对茶的要求各异，有的喜欢中国茶，有的爱喝印度茶，有的喜欢清淡，有的喜欢浓郁，有的加糖，有的加柠檬：真是众口难调。所以就出现了“It is not my cup of tea.”（这不是我喜欢的茶）。
所以one's cup of tea （某人的一杯茶）意为“喜好；正中下怀；钟爱的事物；恰合口味”，还可以写成one's dish of tea.
我们常常听到有人说， He is not my cup of tea， 他不是我的那杯茶，言外之意，他不是我喜欢的人。
这个名词成语般多用于否定句中，有时也可用于肯定句。
例如：
You could always get him to go for a walk.
Hiking1 was just his cup of tea. 你可以经常邀他去散步，他最喜欢徒步旅行了。
Chemistry, not art, is my cup of tea. 我最喜欢的学科是化学，而不是艺术。
