The schooner⁴ was run into the wind, and while the hands were clearing away the stern boat, Queequeg, stripped to the waist,  一看套住了帆杠，魁魁格手里便用上了劲儿，帆杠乖乖地停住了。 

darted⁵ from the side with a long living arc of a leap.  大家悬着的心一下放了下来，一拥而上，收拾起残局来。 

For three minutes or more he was seen swimming like a dog, throwing his long arms straight out before him, and by turns revealing his brawny⁶ shoulders through the freezing foam⁷. 魁魁格从帆杠下面坐起来，甩掉了上衣，走到船的一侧，一个漂亮的弧线形的人水动作，跳入了大海。 

I looked at the grand and glorious fellow, but saw no one to be saved.  波涛之中，他的头顶时隐时现，显然他在找那个落水的小伙子。 

The greenhorn had gone down.  他还是一无所获。 

Shooting himself perpendicularly⁸ from the water, Queequeg, now took an instant's glance around him, and seeming to see just how matters were, dived down and disappeared.  猛的一下，魁魁格又冒出了水面，换了口气，瞅准方向，又扎了下去。

A few minutes more, and he rose again, one arm still striking out, and with the other dragging a lifeless form.  几分钟以后，他又冒出来了。一只手划着水，一只手拽着那一动不动的小伙子。 

The boat soon picked them up.  大家七手八脚地把两个人拉上了船。 

The poor bumpkin was restored.  那小伙子也慢慢地缓过气来。 

All hands voted Queequeg a noble trump⁹; the captain begged his pardon.  人们称赞魁魁格的英雄行为，船长还向他道了歉，

From that hour I clove¹⁰ to Queequeg like a barnacle; yea, till poor Queequeg took his last long dive.  魁魁格没有理会人们的赞誉，他用了些淡水洗净身子，穿上衣服，靠舷墙坐了下来，点上他的烟斗斧，散淡地看着周围的人们。 

Was there ever such unconsciousness? He did not seem to think that he at all deserved a medal from the Humane¹¹ and Magnanimous Societies.  他的目光是柔和的，似乎在说：这没什么，我们野人就应该这么帮助你们文明人！谁让咱们生活在一个世界上呢。
