I leave a white and turbid¹ wake; pale waters, paler cheeks, where'er I sail.  我驶到哪里,那里就留下一条又白又深的船迹;灰蒙蒙的海洋,白茫茫的风帆。

The envious² billows sidelong swell³ to whelm my track; let them; but first I pass. 妒忌的波涛打两边涌起,想淹没我的航道;随它们去吧,不过,我要先驶过去。

Yonder, by the ever-brimming goblet's rim⁴, the warm waves blush like wine.  在那边,在那只始终是泼泼满的大杯边,急浪红似酒。

The gold brow plumbs⁵ the blue. The diver sun-- slow dived from noon-goes down; my soul mounts up! she wearies with her endless hill.  金黄色的夕阳压着苍海。那个潜水鸟似的太阳...打从午刻就缓慢地下潜...在下去了;我的灵魂却在往上攀!它已给它的绵绵无尽的山丘弄累了。

Is, then, the crown too heavy that I wear? this Iron Crown of Lombardy.  那么,难道是我的这只王冠(王冠在这里是双关语,也是指脑盖,头壳。),这只伦巴底的铁冠太重了吗?

Yet is it bright with many a gem⁶; I the wearer, see not its far flashings; but darkly feel that I wear that, that dazzlingly confounds.  但它却因许多宝石而灿烂辉煌;我,这个戴冠人,虽然看不到它那四方远射的光芒;却模糊地觉得,我戴得眼花缭乱了。

Tis iron--that I know--not gold.  它是铁的...这我知道...不是金的。

Tis split, too--that I feel; the jagged edge galls⁷ me so, my brain seems to beat against the solid metal; aye, steel skull⁸, mine; the sort that needs no helmet in the most brain-battering fight! 它已经也豁裂了...这我也觉得;那裂口把我擦伤得这么厉害,教我的脑袋好象是在碰击硬铁;是呀,我的脑壳是钢制的:是一种在最剧烈的绞尽脑汁的战斗中,也不必戴上头盔的脑袋。

Dry heat upon my brow? Oh! time was, when as the sunrise nobly spurred me, so the sunset soothed⁹. No more.  燥热逼着我的额头吗?啊!这是时间的关系,太阳一出来,它就大大刺激了我,所以太阳一落山,我也就安定了。完啦。

This lovely light, it lights not me; all loveliness is anguish¹⁰ to me, since I can ne'er enjoy.  这种可爱的光亮,它照的可不是我;一切可爱美妙的都是教我苦恼的,因为我是再也不能寻欢了。

Gifted with the high perception, I lack the low, enjoying power; damned, most subtly and most malignantly¹¹! damned in the midst of Paradise! Good night--good night! (waving his hand, he moves from the window.) 我天生有高超的理解力,就是缺少些须的享乐才能;滚吧,最微妙而又最不吉利的东西!滚到天堂里面去吧!晚安!晚安!(他挥着手,离开了窗口。)
