　　These temporary apprehensions⁹, so vague but so awful, derived¹⁰ a wondrous¹¹ potency¹² from the contrasting serenity¹³ of the weather, 暂时产生的这些忧虑，是如此暧昧又如此可畏，不免使人觉得那反常的晴朗的天气自有一股奇妙的力量，而在这种天气中，

　　But, at last, when turning to the eastward¹⁸, the Cape¹⁹ winds began howling around us, and we rose and fell upon the long, troubled seas that are there; “不过，最后，当我们向东驶去，好望角吹来的风开始在我们周围呼啸的时候，我们就在那漫长而恼人的海洋上起伏地驶去了。

　　then all this desolate²² vacuity²³ of life went away, but gave place to sights more dismal²⁴ than before. 于是，所有这种凄凉空虚的生活虽然都消失了，可是代之而来的却是比前更为凄凉的景色。

　　Close to our bows, strange forms in the water darted²⁵ hither and thither²⁶ before us; while thick in our rear flew the inscrutable sea-ravens.  靠近我们的船头，海里那些奇形怪状的东西，在我们面前这里那里地窜来窜去；紧迫在我们后面，飞朝着群群不可思议的大乌鸦。
