This Sunday marks the 97th anniversary of the establishment of the Communist Party of China.
It is a longtime goal to realize moderate prosperity in China by the time of the party's centenary. The target was first raised by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and most recently was reaffirmed at the party's key 19th national congress.
Top policymakers believe the coming three to five years could be critical to realize this First Centenary Goal as well as to China's long-term development.
All this is taking place against the backdrop of an increasing uncertainty1 of global trade and geopolitics.
During a meeting with visiting U.S. Secretary of Defense2 James Mattis in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping said the Chinese people were building a great modern socialist3 country, but China would stay on the path of peaceful development, adding that China will neither pursue the path of expansionism and colonialism, nor cause chaos4 in the world.
2018 is also the 40th year since China embarked5 on reform and opening-up.
Amidst rising protectionism and populism around the world, China has just released another slew6 of opening-up measures this week, to further open up fields including finance, transportation, professional services, infrastructure7, energy, resources, and agriculture to foreign investment.
Earlier this month, Xi Jinping told a high-level foreign policy conference that it was important for Chinese diplomats8 to keep in mind both domestic and international priorities and to focus on realizing Chinese nation's rejuvenation9 and make contributions to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
