The lucky ones among his opponents was just be thrown into some dungeon¹¹ or other full of mold and moisture, but barely even the molecule¹² of eatable food. After Ivan had gained a monopoly on power, he did whatever he felt necessary to mould the country in his image. Although morale¹³ among the population, most of whom led extremely monotonous¹⁴ lives, was at a low level. This mattered little to Ivan, who kept on pursuing his monumental schemes, such as opening up the vastness of Siberia to Russian settlement. And yet today, no monument to that notorious monarch¹⁵ survives.
