A court in the United States has begun hearing the US Government case against the credit card companies Visa and Mastercard for alleged1 antitrust violations2 that limit competition.

Last Wednesday, a US judge ruled in a landmark3 anti-trust case that the software giant Microsoft should be broken in two to prevent it abusing its market power.

Still flushed from their victory in that case, US competition regulators are flexing4 their muscles for a battle with the credit card industry.

The credit card giants Visa and Mastercard together control over 75% of the US market.
