精神损失费 mental damage compensation

　　On April 26, 2010, Chen Bentao received the recorded footage and a letter asking him to return the money besides a mental damage compensation¹ of 50,000 yuan.

　　2010年4月26日，陈本涛收到了部分录像光盘和一封信，信中要求他归还“办案经费”，并赔偿5万元精神损失费。

　　在上面的报道中，mental damage compensation就是“精神损失费”，也叫“精神损失赔偿”，还可以用compensation for shock或compensation for mental injury来表示。随着人们法律意识和人权意识的增强，精神损失费也逐渐为大众所熟知。像这种“无形”的损失费还有reputation damage compensation（名誉损失费）。

　　和精神损失相对的是material damage（物质损失），案件审理中经常会提出economic compensation（经济赔偿）。
