LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, June 6 (Xinhua) -- A suicide car bomb went off near a NATO base in Naw Zad district in southern Afghan province of Helmand on Thursday evening, causing casualties, said an official.
"A
militant1 rammed2 his explosive-laden vehicle into the gate of the foreign forces' military base in Anzar Shali area of Naw Zad district at around 5 p.m. local time, causing casualties," the district
administrative3 chief, Seyad Murad, told Xinhua.
Meanwhile, a
provincial7 police official told Xinhua
anonymously8 that the blast killed three Georgian soldiers of the
coalition9 and injuring six other Georgian troops.
Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban
purported10 spokesman, has claimed the responsibility for the incident.
He told local media that a Taliban member named Abdul Ghafar carried out the bombing,
inflicting11 huge casualties on foreign soldiers.
The Taliban-led
insurgency12 has been
rampant13 since the militant group launched an annual offensive in late April against Afghan government forces and about 100,000 NATO-led troops stationed in the country.
On May 13, three Georgian soldiers were killed in a similar attack in Helmand province 555 km south of Afghan capital Kabul.
Nearly 900 Georgian soldiers have been serving within the framework of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the war-hit country.
