VIENNA, June 13 (Xinhua) - Permanent migration1 to Austria increased significantly in 2010/2011 and provisional 2012 figures point to similar findings, the Organisation2 for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) revealed in its International Migration Outlook 2013 report Thursday.
A total of 58,000 people came to Austria in 2011, about 27 percent more than the year prior. Of all OECD countries, only Ireland and Germany reported a higher increase over the same period of time.
One in six of the migrants in 2011 came from Germany, followed by migrants from Romania and Hungary. Two-thirds of all the migrants were from the European Union members.
The OECD said the net effect of the migration is positive, the migrants being net contributors, or paying more into the system via taxes than they withdraw from it via social benefits.
Local Austrian media Der Standard also reported the OECD findings as indicating that while countries should do their best to attract highly-qualified migrants, migrants already in-country and/or with
lesser3 qualifications should be provided with the means to improve them.
