LIMA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Peru and Colombia signed here on Monday two deals aimed at strengthening bilateral1 ties through increased trade and binational cabinet meetings.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Eda Rivas inked a
Joint2 Declaration and a Border Development Plan with her Colombian counterpart Maria Holguin.
In the Declaration, Rivas and Holguin
reiterated3 their commitment to trade cooperation, taking into account that both countries are members of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) and the Pacific Alliance, among others.
The two sides also agreed to hold annual binational cabinet meetings each year, as Peru and Colombia each separately does with Ecuador, to continue to cooperate in improving communities along their shared border.
In the documents, the two countries highlighted the
integration4 scheme for the 1,600-kilometer border they share in the Amazon region.
They stressed the importance of fight against illegal mining, saying it pollutes rivers and destroys forests, and
engenders5 violence, human trafficking, tax
evasion6, money
laundering7 as well as economic maladies.
Holguin is expected to meet Peruvian President Ollanta Humala later in the day to convey an invitation from Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos for Humala to make an official visit to Colombia in the second half of this year.
Holguin will continue her working tour to Uruguay, Argentina and Chile later.
