1. BP says if all goes well, the spewing oil well in the Gulf of Mexico could be contained sometime today. BP is using robots to slice away a broken pipe so engineers can put a cap over the well's opening. At the same time, the Justice Department has opened criminal and civil investigations into the rig explosion and oil spill.

2. Afghan President Hamid Karzai is hosting a peace conference, appealing to the Taliban to make peace, saying that will lead to the departure of foreign troops from the country. But as the conference began, security forces had to battle Taliban suicide attackers. Officials say two of the suicide attackers were killed.

3. Dozens of pro-Palestinian activists detained in the Israeli raid on the Gaza-aid flotilla have arrived in Jordan. The 124 activists crossed the Jordan River early Wednesday aboard five Israeli buses. Most of the activists come from countries without diplomatic ties with Israel.

4. Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has announced he's resigning. He made the announcement today after breaking a campaign promise to move a US marine base off the southern island of Okinawa. The prime minister was facing growing pressure from within his own party to resign ahead of July elections.
