2. A top US envoy is calling for an independent investigation into the violence that has devastated Kyrgyzstan. Rampaging mobs of ethnic Kyrgyz have forced nearly half of the region's roughly 800,000 Uzbeks to flee. About 2,000 people may have died in the clashes.

3. Chinese officials say nearly 100 people have been killed in this week's flooding in southern China. Another 1.4 million have been evacuated as the region prepares for more rains.

4. An associate of former NBA player Manute Bol says the 7-foot-6 center has died. He had been suffering from severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition. The 47-year-old played ten seasons in the NBA, and later worked closely with a humanitarian group to help his native Sudan.
