Yang Li: Simon Rattle is currently principal conductor of the BerlinPhilharmonic.

Yang Li: He is back in Britain to continue with the recent exploration of themusic of Debussy with the 1902 opera of Pelléas et Mélisande.

Yang Li: Let’s listen to Rattle’s description of the opera Pelléas et Mélisande.
InsertThis may be the saddest opera ever written, but it is also well up there among thetop 4 or 5 most beautiful, most ravishing operas ever written. I would think thatanybody who, for instance, who has enjoyed a film like the extraordinary “Lives ofOthers”, who can take something that moves with immense weight, drama andthoughtfulness – would love this.
Yang Li: He said that the opera may be the saddest ever written.
Carol: The saddest. 最悲伤的.
Yang Li: But it is also one of the most beautiful and ravishing operas everwritten.
Carol: Ravishing,引人入胜。拉图认为,《佩丽亚斯和梅里桑德》是最为 美丽动人、引人入胜的歌剧,就好像精品电影 《窃听风暴》一样令人回味悠长。
Yang Li: To him this is a piece that moves with immense weight, drama andthoughtfulness.

Yang Li: Rattle was born in Liverpool, and studied at Liverpool College. Helearned the piano and violin, but his early work with orchestras wasas a percussionist.
Carol: A percussionist, 打击乐手。
Yang Li: As a British conductor working with a German orchestra does hefeel that he needs to approach music differently?
Carol: 虽然在德国乐团任职,但由于德国和英国都是欧洲国家,加上两国乐团的常备剧目都包括德国和奥地利历史上经典作家例如布鲁克纳、瓦格纳、勃拉姆斯和贝多芬的作品,所以拉图并不觉得在德国当指挥比在英国更困难。
InsertI think - this is all European repertoire. What is clear is that there is a very centralrepertoire of Bruckner, Wagner, Brahms, Beethoven, where it’s deep, deep insidetheir bodies and it’s then just simply easier to get what you want, rather thanmore difficult.
Yang Li: What he was saying is that there is a central repertoire of differentcomposers. You often hear the word repertoire in music.
Carol: Repertoire - 常备剧目。 正是因为这种共性,所以在指挥的时候不是更难反而更容易了。
Yang Li: One of the greatest challenges for a conductor is the interpretationof music.
Carol: 如何获得对音乐的正确理解和诠释,是指挥家面临的最大困难。拉图说,为了解决这一难题,指挥家们常常在一起互相探讨。
InsertFrankly, any advice you can get from great conductors, living or dead, is useful.
We all steal and plagiarise from each other. We’re often all on the phone to eachother – how do you pack this particular suitcase?
Yang Li: It’s interesting to hear that he used the words steal and plagiarise.
Carol: Steal and plagiarise, 剽窃、抄袭。
Yang Li: But what he meant was that they are willing to learn from eachother.
Carol: 你如何指挥这部音乐作品? “How do you pack this particular suitcase?”
不过,成名的指挥家是不是总要想着要独树一帜呢?
Yang Li: Well, he said you must grow out of it, 你必须从那种心态中走出来才行。
InsertYou know I hope you really grow out of that. Because that means you’resomehow by the side of the music – I think the thing is to plunge in and swim.
But actually, when you’re in the water, actually how you swim matters less, andthe idea that I must have a different style from somebody else - no, I think youhave to go to the depths of your gut, right or wrong. And frankly, my experiencehas been - whenever I’ve tried to imitate something or somebody else in myearlier life – it ends up sounding even more like me, whether I like it or not -doesn’t really help, but however, there’s much to learn from everybody.
Carol: 如果你总想着与众不同, 那么你就没有真正地融入音乐。But you aresomehow by the side of the music.
Yang Li: He compares this to swimming; you must plunge in and swim.
Carol: 你必须纵身跳入水中去游泳。你要鼓足勇气,无论是对还是错。
Yang Li: Just be your natural self.
Carol: But, there is much to learn from everybody. 没错,每个人身上都有很多优点值得我们学习。
Yang Li: I love this piece of advice; there is much to learn from everybody.
