President Bush says if new elections are held in Ukraine they must be fair, open and free of any foreign influence. Mr. Bush insists the will of the Ukrainian people must be known and heard.

 

美国总统布什说,如果乌克兰重新举行选举,这些选举必须是公平的、公开的、不受任何外国影响的选举。布什坚持认为,乌克兰人民的意愿必须得到体现和倾听。

President Bush says any new election in Ukraine must meet certain standards.

 

布什总统说,乌克兰举行的任何新选举,都必须符合一定的标准。

"Any election in any country must reflect the will of the people and not that of any foreign government," the president said.

 

布什总统说:“任何国家举行的任何选举都必须反映人民的意愿,而不是任何外国政府的意愿。”

The president was asked about the possibility of new elections in Ukraine during a brief question and answer session with Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

 

布什在和尼日利亚总统奥巴桑乔举行一个简短问答会时,被问及乌克兰举行新选举的可能性。

Mr. Bush once again thanked European leaders who are trying to mediate the Ukrainian crisis. He said he is watching their efforts closely."We will continue to monitor and be involved in the process that encourages there to be a peaceful resolution of this issue," he said. "And there are different options on the table and we are watching carefully what has taken place."

 

布什再次感谢那些试图调解乌克兰危机的欧洲国家领导人。他说,他正在密切关注他们的努力。布什总统说:“我们将继续监督并参与鼓励和平解决这个问题的有关进程。目前有可供选择的不同方案,我们正在密切留意选择哪种方式。”

He spoke shortly after outgoing Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma met in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During that meeting, Mr. Putin criticized calls for a new election in Ukraine.

A presidential election on November 21 pitted pro-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych against Western-leaning opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko.

Despite allegations of massive fraud by both the opposition and international observers, Mr. Yanukovych was declared the winner, prompting massive demonstration in the streets of Kiev and other cities.

 

虽然反对派和国际观察人士指控选举中出现很多舞弊现象,但是亚奴科维奇还是被宣布为获胜者。这引发了基辅和其它城市的大规模街头抗议示威。
