The International Federation of Red Cross Societies has issued a 1)preliminary 2)appeal for $1.5 million to get emergency relief operations underway for 3)victims of the earthquake in Peru.
The earthquake 4)flattened mountain villages and 5)triggered 6)mudslides, causing extensive damage Saturday in southern Peru.
The head of Red Cross Operations for the Americas and Pacific, Iain Logan, says more than 90 percent of houses in the Peruvian city of Moquegua are damaged, 40 percent of them are completely destroyed, at least 60,000 people are homeless. "There was massive damage to homes and many, many people - more than I think was 7)anticipated are living outside in the open," he said. "What the final amount will be it is going to take us a few days to really get a clear picture to what the extent of that is. There are a number of towns that are completely 8)cut off, even by road. We cannot get in."
The Red Cross says the number of dead, injured, missing and homeless will rise further as information comes in from 9)isolated areas. It says damage to roads, telephone and electricity lines is extensive and communication is very difficult and slow.
The government is trying to identify buildings, 10)stadiums and other places where people can be 11)temporarily housed. "At this particular date, it is too early to be setting up camps or anything like that," says Mr. Logan. "We will probably be looking at a combination of solutions for 12)shelter over the next few days. Some in permanent structures that can be 13)vacated, like school buildings. Some will be helping to repair homes which are not so badly damaged and others will be replacing it with shelter equipment, plastic sheeting and tents and 14)tarpaulin and that kind of thing. Anything to get them under cover and out from the elements until we can come up with a longer-term solution."
Priority needs include tents and blankets, food and water. Mr. Logan says health needs will have to be met 15)swiftly, as there is a fear of epidemics breaking out.
